Large Chinese moon-gate (yuè dòng mén) bogu display shelf composed of two rectilinear cases joined by a circular central opening. Constructed in hardwood likely within the hongmu/rosewood family, with a warm medium-brown finish and pronounced grain. Features stepped open shelves with carved corner spandrels, small base cabinets on each side, and two drawers per side with brass ring pulls and a scalloped lower apron. The segmented circular arch is built from mitered sections and capped by a top plaque gilt-inscribed with the auspicious phrase “吉祥如意” (Good fortune as you wish). If presented as huanghuali or zitan, treat the claim with caution. A word about fakes.. Chinese classical hardwood furniture—especially pieces claimed to be huanghuali or zitan and elaborate moon-gate bogu shelves—are heavily reproduced; authentic period examples show deeper patina, oxidation, shrinkage gaps, and hand-wrought hardware. As a quality modern piece, it has solid decorative and functional value but should not command antique-level prices.
