This vase is a well-executed Kangxi revival blue-and-white bottle vase, but the evidence strongly indicates modern manufacture. The porcelain body is very white and even, the glaze is uniformly glossy without the softer, slightly bluish or ‘waxy’ surface typical of 17th–18th century wares, and the footrim shows clean machining and homogeneous firing rather than the more irregular, slightly gritty biscuit of genuine Kangxi pieces. The six-character ‘Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi’ mark is neatly but mechanically written, lacking the fluid calligraphic energy and spacing of imperial or early Qing marks. The painting of Budai and the floral borders, while charming, is relatively stiff and formulaic compared with period work, and the blue tone has a consistent, synthetic quality. There is also an absence of meaningful age wear: no rim fritting, no glaze contraction, and only light, superficial dirt to the foot. A word about fakes.. Kangxi-marked blue-and-white vases are heavily copied, and the majority on the market today are later reproductions like this one.
