Description:

A rectangular brass-bound campaign writing chest in mahogany with flush brass carrying handles and an inset brass escutcheon and plaque, fitted interior with pen tray, inkwell compartments, lidded sections and a leather-covered writing surface; accompanied by a later custom mahogany stand with bracket spandrels and stretchers.

Assessment:

Well-made brass-bound writing slope of the Victorian campaign period showing age-consistent use and oxidation to the mounts; interior largely intact with compartments, though the writing surface appears a later replacement and some fittings (inkwells) are missing. The simple hardwood stand is a later addition made to convert the slope to a side table and does not affect the age of the box itself. A word about fakes.. Campaign furniture is widely reproduced (especially in India) with shiny brass and new woods; this example shows convincing patina, slot-head screws, shrinkage and mature surface consistent with 19th-century manufacture.
