Today’s appraisal is a rare category indeed: the invisible masterpiece. Without a photo, I can’t read the visual clues that tell us what an object is—its materials, its technique, its wear, or the small maker’s marks that often make the difference between a decorative reproduction and the real thing.
To date an artwork or antique, I need to see construction details and surfaces up close: is a ceramic footrim hand-finished, is a bronze casting chased by hand, is a frame jointed with old nails or modern staples, is the patina naturally built over decades—or applied last week?
Condition also lives in the details: hairlines, restorations, overpainting, replaced hardware, later screws, and fresh tool marks. These are not “gotchas”; they’re the object’s biography, and they materially affect auction value.
A word about fakes.. many categories—especially Asian export objects, "antique" bronzes, and signed modern prints—are heavily reproduced, so clear images are essential to avoid being fooled by convincing copies.
