Here we have a charming Chinese cloisonné enamel covered ginger jar — small in scale, but visually busy in the best possible way. Its rounded form, domed lid, turquoise ground, and tight network of spiral wirework give it that unmistakable cloisonné presence: part jewel box, part miniature vase, part pure decorative delight.
The design draws on older Chinese decorative vocabulary, especially the floral sprays and scrolling ground, but this is not reading as an early imperial survivor. Instead, it looks much more like a mid-20th-century workshop piece made for the export market, when cloisonné from China became widely collected abroad.
The body appears to be copper, with brass or copper rims, and the enamel is applied within metal cloisons in the classic manner. The interior is also enameled, and the impressed number inside the lid looks like a stock or factory control number rather than a reign mark — always an important distinction.
Condition appears generally good for a decorative object of this type: some pitting, minor enamel wear, and ordinary rubbing to the metal rims. Nothing here suggests palace quality, but neither does it look like a recent fake fantasy piece.
The jar is stamped "CHINA" on the bottom which greatly assists with dating. The U.S. McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 required that imported goods had to be marked with their country of origin, and from around 1914 onward the English word “CHINA” was commonly used on Chinese exports, especially to the U.S. and Europe.
So, my view: an authentic Chinese cloisonné jar, likely circa 1920 to 1940 Conservative auction estimate: about $100 to $200 if sold correctly. A handsome little survivor — and far more honest than those pieces that carry spurious imperial reign marks.
