Description:

A full-length Chinese woman's robe with straight sleeves and front opening, made of turquoise silk satin/damask and richly embroidered with roundel medallions of flowers, birds and butterflies, scattered floral sprays, and navy borders with scrolling peonies. Lined in light silk; sleeve bands and front plackets trimmed with embroidered borders.

Assessment:

Well-composed late-Qing woman’s informal robe with fashionable turquoise ground and floral roundels. Construction, sleeve shape, and embroidered borders are consistent with c. 1875–1900 garments. Wear, staining along the front placket, and fraying at edges appear age-appropriate. A word about fakes.. Chinese textiles are widely reproduced; beware machine stitching, polyester thread, and overly bright modern dyes or uniformly pristine condition. Based on visible hand embroidery, woven damask ground, and natural age wear, this example reads as a period piece. A word about fakes..

Condition:

Good (age-related staining at placket, fraying at edges and cuffs, scattered thread loss; not conserved)

Identification Score: 85%

Design, cut, trim style, and embroidery place it convincingly as a late-Qing woman’s informal robe (chang'ao) rather than a dragon robe or surcoat.

Authenticity Score: 70%

Hand-embroidered motifs on a silk damask ground, appropriate lining and wear suggest period manufacture; however, without fiber/dye testing and close-ups of seams and buttons, some uncertainty remains.
