Description:

A matched pair of tall side chairs in the late 17th-century William & Mary taste: arched and scrolled cresting framing a hand-caned panel back, turned uprights, caned trapezoidal seats, block-and-baluster legs joined by H-stretchers with a prominent vasiform front stretcher, and flared ‘Spanish’ feet. Old reddish-brown surface with extensive age wear and repairs.

These are convincing William & Mary style caned chairs with good period forms: arched and scrolled cresting, tall caned backs, baluster legs, H-stretchers and Spanish feet. The surfaces show heavy oxidation, scattered worming, and significant use, while the caning and rails display losses and structural repairs (including a metal plate at the back). Construction and wear suggest a well-aged revival pair rather than unquestionably period William & Mary. If proven period (c. 1690–1710), value would be notably higher, but current condition and uncertainties keep the auction estimate conservative. A word about fakes.. cane-back ‘William & Mary’ chairs are widely reproduced; scrutinize joinery (hand-cut mortise-and-tenon, early pegs, hand-laced cane in drilled holes, absence of machine marks) to avoid later copies.
