Description:

A lift-top blanket chest (mule chest) in oxidized red-brown wash, the dovetailed case above two drawers, with molded lid and base and a cutout bracket skirt with circular piercings. The sides show large through-dovetails; drawers fitted with later brass bail pulls; original iron lock present; small paper label fragment on the front.

Assessment:

This is a solid example of a New England mule chest from the late 18th–early 19th century. The large, slightly irregular through-dovetails, oxidized pine, shrinkage, and honest wear to edges and feet support a period build. The base with pierced cutouts and the two-drawer configuration are regionally common. Hardware appears to be later nineteenth-century or early twentieth-century replacements, which is typical and does not preclude period manufacture. A word about fakes.. early American blanket and mule chests are widely reproduced and sometimes heavily 'antiqued'; look for machine-cut dovetails, unnaturally even surfaces, and pristine interiors—none of which appear here.
