Hello, collectors! Today we're looking at a very striking pair of Chinese barrel-form stools. At first glance, they present the rich, deep red color and intricate floral motifs characteristic of traditional Chinese cinnabar lacquer. The tops feature a central bloom surrounded by scrolling foliage and a classic key-fret border, while the sides bulge outward with large floral panels supported by elegant cabriole legs. However, when we look closely at the materials and craftsmanship, a different story emerges. Authentic cinnabar lacquer is created through a painstaking process of applying dozens, sometimes hundreds, of thin layers of tree sap mixed with cinnabar pigment, which is then meticulously hand-carved. On these stools, the 'carving'—particularly the diaper ground behind the flowers—is mechanically uniform. The edges lack the crispness of a hand-carved tool mark, and the texture strongly suggests they are made from a molded resin or composite material designed to simulate lacquer. Furthermore, the wear on the black undersides looks more like scuffed modern paint or composite rather than the natural aging of antique lacquer over a wooden core. Because the visual evidence points to a modern manufacturing process, these are classified as late 20th or early 21st-century decorative reproductions. While a genuine pair of antique, hand-carved cinnabar stools of this size could easily command $10,000 to $30,000 or more at auction, these modern resin examples are valued purely for their decorative appeal. I would estimate their auction value at a modest $300 to $600 for the pair. They offer a fantastic pop of color and traditional style, even if they don't carry the weight of history!

Assessment:
These stools are highly decorative but appear to be modern reproductions made of molded resin or a similar composite material designed to simulate the look of deeply carved traditional Chinese cinnabar lacquer. The uniformity of the 'carving', the lack of natural wear, the appearance of the black interior/underside, and the overall texture strongly suggest a modern manufacturing process rather than the painstaking, time-consuming process of building up and carving dozens of layers of natural lacquer.

Condition:
Very Good (decorative condition, some scuffs to the black finish on the underside)
Identification Score: 95%
The form and decorative motifs are clearly identifiable as Chinese barrel stools in the cinnabar lacquer style. 其形制和装饰图案可以清楚地辨认为中国剔红漆器风格的鼓凳。
Authenticity Score: 10%
The visual evidence strongly points to modern molded resin or composite rather than authentic carved lacquer. The 'carved' edges lack the crispness of hand-carved lacquer, the diaper ground is mechanically uniform, and the wear on the black underside looks artificial or consistent with modern materials rather than antique lacquer.
