Hello, collectors! Today we're looking at a piece that often catches the eye with its deep red color and intricate designs: a Chinese box in the style of carved cinnabar lacquer. This rectangular box features a classic scene of figures in a pavilion garden on the lid, surrounded by lush floral motifs on the sides. While it bears a six-character mark on the base claiming it was made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the 18th century, a closer inspection reveals a different story. Authentic cinnabar lacquer is created by applying dozens, sometimes hundreds, of thin layers of tree sap colored with cinnabar pigment, which is then meticulously carved by hand. When we look closely at this box, however, we don't see the crisp, sharp edges of hand-carving or the subtle striations of layered lacquer. Instead, the surface has a slightly uniform, rounded appearance, and the mark on the bottom is molded directly into the material rather than incised. These features tell us that this is actually a modern decorative reproduction, likely made of a molded resin or composite material in the late 20th century. The metal rims, probably brass, are a nice touch, but the overall construction confirms it's a mass-produced piece meant to mimic the look of a valuable antique. Because it is a modern resin copy rather than authentic period lacquer, its value is primarily decorative. At auction, a piece like this would typically estimate between $20 and $50. It's a great example of why we always have to look past the mark and examine the materials and craftsmanship! Keep hunting, and stay curious.

Description:
A rectangular box with a domed lid, deeply molded in the style of Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer. The top features a figural landscape scene with scholars or figures in a garden pavilion setting, surrounded by a key-fret border. The sides are decorated with dense floral and foliate motifs. The interior is black, and the base bears a molded apocryphal six-character Qianlong reign mark. The material appears to be a molded resin or composite rather than authentic carved lacquer.

Assessment:
This is a modern decorative reproduction designed to imitate traditional Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer. The uniform, slightly dull surface, the lack of distinct carved layers, and the molded appearance of the mark and decoration strongly indicate it is made of resin or a similar composite material. The Qianlong mark is apocryphal and molded into the base, a common feature on these mass-produced decorative items.
