This is a contemporary reproduction of the classic Chinese moon-gate bogu shelf, not an imperial- or late-Qing period original. Indicators include the highly uniform machine-made brackets, segmented engineered arch, fresh and even finish with minimal oxidation or wear, crisp drawer tolerances with modern brass ring pulls, and the applied gilt calligraphic cartouche—an afterthought more typical of modern decorative pieces than historic furniture. The wood presents as generic hongmu/rosewood rather than rare huanghuali or zitan. As decorative furniture it is handsome and functional, but historically it should be catalogued as late 20th–early 21st century. A word about fakes.. Moon-gate and bogu shelves are heavily reproduced in today’s market; many are marketed as ‘Qing period’ despite recent manufacture, so caution is warranted.
