Description:

A matched pair of carved and painted beechwood bergères (enclosed-arm fauteuils) in the Louis XV revival manner. Each chair has a rounded back with a small floral cresting, scrolled padded arms, a serpentine seat with a loose cushion, and a shaped apron carved with rocaille and acanthus above cabriole legs ending in stylized scrolled feet. The frames retain a worn cream/ivory painted surface with traces of gilt. Upholstered in a floral Aubusson-style tapestry in muted rose, rust, beige and ochre tones, with matching arm pads and piped edges.

The carving vocabulary (shell-and-acanthus apron, floral crest, cabriole legs) and the gently scrolled, generously proportioned forms are consistent with Parisian and provincial revival work made for the bourgeois market. The painted surface shows appropriate rub and age toning; the tapestry upholstery appears later but sympathetic. Not likely mid-18th-century period pieces because of the overall proportions, uniform machine-like regularity, and the revival-era painted finish. A word about fakes.. Louis XV chairs are widely reproduced; watch for overly crisp machine carving, brand-new paint, and stapled modern upholstery foundations.
