Description:
This is a Japanese samurai helmet (kabuto) with an accompanying menpo (facial mask) from the Edo period. The kabuto features a riveted, multi-plate construction with a raised central ridge and deeply flanged fukigaeshi (side wings), which are adorned with gilt family crests (mon). The menpo is lacquered and designed to protect the lower face, with an attached throat guard (yodare-kake) made of lamellar iron plates laced with silk cord. The overall craftsmanship, construction techniques, and patina are consistent with late Edo period armory intended for ceremonial and, less often, combat use.
