Here we have a handsome “Chinese Guangxu Mark Blue and White Figural Square Porcelain Vase” — a tall, architectural form with square sides rising to a trumpet mouth. Each panel tells a story: courtly ladies and scholars on a terrace on one side, armored warriors and banners on the other, like two scenes from a lost drama frozen in cobalt. The Guangxu reign mark on the base situates this vase in the long shadow of the late Qing dynasty, though pieces like this were also reproduced into the Republic and even later, as collectors fell in love with their stately profile and narrative painting. The body is a fine white porcelain, decorated in underglaze blue that’s even and cool in tone. The brushwork is neat and confident, but slightly more disciplined than the spirited Kangxi prototypes it emulates — a clue that we’re in the world of revival rather than origin. Condition is very good: no obvious chips or cracks in the photos, only light soiling and a few firing specks to the unglazed base — the kinds of flaws connoisseurs forgive, and sometimes even expect. On authenticity, I’d place this around 40 out of 100 — certainly Chinese, likely late Qing to Republic in style, but with some hallmarks of a later workshop piece. At auction, an accepted period example might bring $800–1,500; a later 20th-century reproduction more in the $150–300 range. Either way, it’s a vase that doesn’t just hold flowers — it stages an entire play in blue and white.

Description:
Tall square-shouldered porcelain vase with flared circular neck, each main side painted in underglaze cobalt blue with narrative scenes of scholars, ladies and attendants in pavilion and terrace settings above stylised rockwork. The neck is sparsely decorated with small bats. The base bears a four‑character underglaze blue Guangxu mark within a recessed square. The glaze is clean and bright, and the cobalt is even and slightly greyish‑blue, typical of later Qing to Republic wares.

Assessment:
A well-painted Chinese square-section blue and white porcelain vase bearing a Guangxu reign mark. The figural scenes are competently executed but slightly stiff, and the glaze and foot suggest a late Qing to early Republic manufacture rather than an earlier Kangxi prototype. The recessed square foot and neatly written four-character mark are consistent with commercially made Guangxu-marked wares from Jingdezhen. Collectible as a decorative and historical piece, with stronger interest if confirmed as circa 1900 rather than a mid–late 20th-century copy.

Identification Score: 88%
Form, decoration, footrim, and Guangxu four-character mark clearly indicate a Chinese blue and white square vase of late Qing/Republic type; only exact dating within that range remains uncertain.
Authenticity Score: 40%
The piece is almost certainly Chinese and of the general period style, but the very clean glaze, sharp edges, and standardized, even cobalt suggest the possibility of a later 20th-century reproduction with Guangxu apocryphal mark. Without handling the body and glaze in person, I assume reproduction until proven otherwise. A word about fakes.. blue and white ‘Guangxu’ marked vases are heavily copied, so caution is essential.
