Description:
This is a complete set of Japanese samurai armor, known as Yoroi, dating to the Edo period (1603–1868). The ensemble features elaborate lacquered iron and leather plates, connected with cord lacing (odoshi), with a kabuto (helmet) adorned with a pair of gilt maedate (crest). The facial armor (menpo) is forged with expressive features and the cuirass bears a high-relief dragon motif, indicative of a high-status samurai. The artistry, coloration (notably indigo and brown) and craftsmanship are consistent with armor from the mid-to-late Edo period, a time when samurai armor served more for parade and status than battlefield use.
