Kangxi-Style Chinese Famille Verte Porcelain Charger with Ladies and Boys
Original Presentation Script

Here we have a lively “Ladies and Boys” spectacle: a large Kangxi‑style famille verte porcelain charger, its surface buzzing with small figures, fluttering banners, and a butterfly or two for good measure. The scene is classic late‑seventeenth‑century taste — elegant court ladies at leisure, surrounded by romping boys in a garden. For Qing viewers this wasn’t just charming; it symbolized prosperity, status, and above all, many sons. The palette is the giveaway: crisp greens, iron‑red, aubergine and yellow enamels, all floating on a cool white glaze. The outlines are neatly drawn, and the diaper border packed with peony blossoms shows a decorator well versed in Kangxi vocabulary. Turn it over, though, and the story changes. The double blue circle is correct in type, but the foot is very evenly turned, the biscuit clean, and the glaze fresh and glossy, with none of the accumulated wear or firing quirks you’d expect after three centuries of service. So in authenticity terms, we’re in the realm of homage, not survivor: roughly a 20% chance of being period, far more likely a late‑20th‑century Jingdezhen revival piece. Still, as decorative porcelain it succeeds brilliantly — big, colorful, and instantly readable on a wall. At auction today, I’d expect this charger to bring in the region of $200 to $400. It delivers the look of Kangxi luxury, without the six‑figure anxiety of owning the real thing.

Description:

Large porcelain charger decorated in famille verte enamels, the cavetto painted with two court ladies surrounded by frolicking boys in a garden landscape of rocks, bamboo and flowering plants. The wide rim shows a diaper-ground with scattered peony blossoms and foliage. The reverse has scattered auspicious ribboned emblems and a double blue circle to the base. Footrim is relatively even and sandy, with scattered kiln grit and iron spots; enamels are bright and sit slightly raised on the glaze.

Assessment:

Decorative Kangxi-revival famille verte charger of good quality but almost certainly modern. The composition with ladies and boys, bright palette, and diaper border closely follows late 17th–early 18th century prototypes, yet the very clean, evenly turned footrim, uniform glaze, and lack of genuine age wear suggest contemporary manufacture. Still, it is an attractive display piece with solid decorative and modest collector interest.

Condition:

Very good (bright enamels, no obvious chips or cracks visible; minor firing specks and light wear only)

Identification Score: 92%

Form, palette, subject matter and double blue ring mark clearly place this as a Chinese famille verte charger imitating Kangxi-period wares; details of decoration and construction are consistent with modern Kangxi-revival porcelain.

Authenticity Score: 20%

Proportions and decoration echo genuine Kangxi famille verte, but the very fresh enamels, near-perfect glaze, sharply cut and even footrim, and lack of kiln imperfections or long-term wear point strongly to a late 20th–21st century reproduction rather than a 17th–18th century period piece. A word about fakes.. Kangxi famille verte is heavily reproduced, and many convincing modern copies exist, so caution is essential.
