Description:

A painted pine blanket chest on a bracket-foot base, with a molded overhanging lid, large hand-cut dovetail case joinery, and a lower case fitted with two working drawers flanking a central false drawer panel. Retains a dry red-brown surface with heavy wear and an old paper shipping/ownership label tacked to the front. Later brass bail pulls; likely original iron nails in the carcass. Form and construction typical of rural New England or mid-Atlantic work.

This is a convincing period country chest rather than a modern reproduction. Indicators include large irregular hand-cut dovetails, oxidized pine surfaces, shrinkage and corner wear consistent with 18th–early 19th century use, and a base with cut-out bracket feet typical of rural New England work. The later brass pulls and hard wear lower value but do not detract from authenticity; the paper label suggests 19th-century re-use/ownership. A word about fakes.. Centennial-era (late 19th–early 20th c.) revival chests are common; watch for machine-cut dovetails, uniform screws, and artificially distressed finishes—none of which are evident here.
